Study At Your Own Pace
Distance Learning Graduate Programs are designed for self-directed adults who want to study at their own pace. This means that if you want to take all of the coursework and complete all of the assignments associated with them in 18 months, you can do that. If you want to take 3 or 4 years, you can do that. If you want to do your research and dissertation in 1 year, you can do that. If you want to take 3 years, you can do that.
For most of these programs, the basic frame-of-reference is one of providing a structure and you providing the schedule within that structure.
Keep Your Day Job
These kinds of programs are designed so that you can continue to work and maintain your profession or your career, and you can take the small amount of time you need to attend the on-campus residencies without having a major impact on your work performance. You can continue with your normal job and complete your study for your doctorate.
Design Your Own Program
Because you are a self-directed adult, the programs are designed to facilitate you in achieving what you want from them. The school I attend is focused on social research and the curriculum helps me learn how to be very good at that. So, whatever I want to personally focus on is encouraged and the school will make sure I am educated, practiced, and challenged in the specific content arena in which I want to pursue my research.
